Recording Performance Videos: What "Good Enough" Looks Like

Real proof, not polish — the video standard, and how to capture it without breaking the lesson.

This article is for Teachers recording videos during lessons. Owners and Admins can view, filter, and download every video across the studio on the Videos tab.

The standard: real proof, not polish

A good Musician Quest video is:

  • Recorded during the lesson - not assigned as homework, not staged later

  • Clearly the student performing the skill - that's the whole job

  • Short - long enough to demonstrate the skill, no longer

  • Steady and audible - phone held still, sound you can hear

That's the entire bar. Explicitly not required:

  • Studio lighting or careful angles

  • A perfect take

  • Re-recording for vanity

Capture the moment - not the highlight reel. A real 30-second clip with a small stumble beats a polished third take every time, because families aren't grading production; they're watching their kid do something they couldn't do last month.

How to record

Videos are recorded directly in the app, from the skill on the student's Quest page. Have your phone or device ready before the lesson starts so the recording is a fifteen-second interruption, not a production number.

When to record

The natural moment is right when the student first demonstrates the skill cleanly - the same demonstration you'd already be asking for. Record it, tap Mark Complete, and the video rides along in the celebration email home.

A note for the camera-shy

Some students freeze when the phone comes out. Two things help: make recording routine (when it happens most weeks, it stops being an event), and frame it as their portfolio - "this is going in your collection" lands very differently than "I need to film you."

Why this matters

Every video becomes part of a growing musical portfolio - a visible record of real accomplishment. A year from now, a family scrolling from the first wobbly clip to the latest confident one is a family that never wonders whether lessons are working.
